Curling and Vikings
Published by Phillip Richardson February 16th, 2006 in Torino 2006Last night was full of good curling matches. Three of the four matches were very close. Italy beat the USA by one point :( The fans were fun last night as well. Last night was the first time I’ve been at a norwegian game, and the fans were wild. I first noticed them before they were even in site. They marched into the stands singing for their team, and when they turned the corner i saw their Viking helmets. From that point on the only time they were quiet was when Norway was delivering the rock. With all these factors combined the evening seemed to go by much faster than usual.
The down side of each shift is the cable itself. We have been given the cheapest cable around. It is meant for permanant installation, so the shield around the cable is extra thick, making the cable impossible to flex. Whenever the cable is bent it wants to stay that way. This causes major problems when the camera man is walking down the ice and I am carrying the tripod for him. On the return trip back to my “nook” behind the scoreboard, I have to untangle all the knots while trying not to disturb the athletes. The whole situation is somewhat ludicrous. On TV it doesn’t come across as a huge problem, but from the stands you can see eight utilites frantically rushing to untangle eight individual cables and return to their hiding spot without being distracting. I’m sure it must be quite humorous.
I have two days of long shifts and then a day off on Sunday. Maybe I’ll have some good stories after then. I am not sure what I am going to do yet, but whatever I end up doing it should be fun.Â
